Gudanji for Country

The Gudanji Traditional Owners have a powerful initiative through Gudanji for Country. This initiative is in response to the current environmental challenges Gudanji mob faces and their long-time aspiration to document and preserve their cultural knowledge. Gerry and I (Nyoka) were honoured to be invited to Gudanji Traditional Lands at Little River, Northern Territory, for a 9-day camp on country. This trip was our first time with Gudanji mob, which is very exciting! Eight other amazing people attended this trip.

Documenting, and preserving cultural knowledge

Gudanji for Country are committed to advocating for the voices of their elders and raising awareness. In addition to their struggles and environmental concerns, Gudanji for Country is transforming something negative into a positive by capturing, documenting, and preserving their Traditional knowledge, showing the drive and dedication they have to their country.

Observation of diversity

We saw such abundance of native wildlife diversity, including many enormous wedge-tailed eagles, kangaroo’s, crows, ducks, brolga’s, sugar bag (native bees), freshwater yabby and turtles, termite mounds, and what the traditional owners call monkey birds; because of the sounds they make are like rowdy monkeys, herds of wild pest buffalos, and the abundance of bush tucker and medicine plants. I even made my own Coolaman, which was taught by Coolaman master, Aunty Elaine. When Gudanji mob took us out on country, showing us around, our walking tracks looked like we were lost or confused because our tracks weaved in and out, all over the place, with excitement from the diversity of nature and plants. I guess we wouldn’t win a straight-line contest!

Looking forward.

As Gudanji for Country continues to navigate important initiatives, the support and collaboration of knowledgeable and passionate individuals will be invaluable. Together, we can work towards a future where the Gudanji people’s connection to their land and culture is respected and preserved for generations to come. A massive thankyou to Gudanji for Country for inviting and welcoming us, on your beautiful country, sharing your sacred knowledge, and trust. We would also like to extend our gratitude and thanks for all the amazing bush-buddies for also sharing their knowledge and passion, and we cannot wait for our next bush camp on country!
